ANAMBAS WEEKEND TRIP WITH MV MEGA EXPLORER

About Anambas Island

Diving in Anambas has always been amazing. The Anambas Islands are a group of islands in Riau Islands Province, Indonesia, situated 150 nautical miles north east of Batam, between the Malaysian mainland to the west and the island of Borneo to the east, within the South China Sea.

The islands are popular dive sites because of the unspoiled corals reefs and crystal clear water. In May and October each year, Whale Sharks are spotted during the their migration.

Some of the well-known dive sites include Damar Pinnacle, Katoka Reef, Malangbiru and Repong. The dive sites are filled with pristine, healthy corals with abundance of colourful marine life, such as nudibranchs, turtles, napoleon fish, barracudas, batfish, crocodile fish, bumpheads, blue spotted stingrays, moray eels etc.

On Sunday, we will be visiting the famous Igara Wreck. The Igara was an Italian ore/oil steamship of 136,400 tonnes when it sank on 12 March 1973, while on voyage from Vitoria to Muroran after she struck an uncharted rock in the South China Sea about 190 miles (310 km) from Horsburgh Lighthouse, on 11 March 1973. However, she did not sink immediately but continued her voyage until her bow settled submerged and resting on the sea bottom in approx 40 metres of water about 70 miles (110 km) from Singapore.

The wreck is now overgrown with soft corals, sponges and hydroids. Divers frequently see schools of barracudas, snappers, fusiliers, angelfish, groupers, and batfish. Divers have also reported seeing large groupers as well as a huge nurse shark at the wreck before.

Current may be strong at times, hence this trip is only recommended for Advanced Open Water Divers and above. The visibility is often good, sometimes even beyond 30m.

The best way to get to Anambas is by Liveaboard. And the biggest problem we face is always not enough time to do more dives as this place is really very nice. So now with the long weekend, we are able to have 3 diving days instead of 2, and do 10 dives for the trip!

We will be cruising and diving from the newest and probably the best LOB in Singapore, MV Mega Explorer for this trip.
